David Livingstone
(1813-1873)

Famous Livingstone Quotes:
"The mission of the Church is missions." "Anywhere, provided it be forward." "The best remedy for a sick church is to put it on a missionary diet." "Sympathy is no substitute for action."
"Do we pray 'Thy Kingdom come', but never, 'Here am I, Lord send me?'"
"This generation can only reach this generation."
"God had an only Son, and He made Him a missionary."
"If we have not enough in our religion to drive us to share it with all the world, it is doomed here at home."
"Christ alone can save the world, but Christ cannot save the world alone."
Known as one of the greatest missionary-explorers of all time, David Livingstone was a man with a heart for Africa. He was born near Glasgow, Scotland, in humble surroundings. As a child, he worked in a textile mill from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.. Although he was raised in a church-going family, he did not come to Christ until he was a teenager. Motivated by the challenge of unreached villages, he joined a missionary named Robert Moffat in his African missions.
Through the course of his life, Livingstone traveled 1400 miles into the interior of Africa, covering one-third of the continent. During this time he was maimed by a lion, attacked by fever and dysentery, and lost his first wife. Despite these hardships, Livingstone continued to share the Gospel, make scientific observations, and explore. He contributed more to the early knowledge of African geography than any other westerner. In 1873, Livingstone died in Africa. The natives lovingly buried his heart near Lake Tanganikamil and had his body sent back to his homeland of Scotland. His death sparked a great missionary fever throughout Europe.

William Carey
(1761-1834)
 Famous Carey Quote:
"Expect great things of God...attempt great things for God."
William Carey is known as the "Father of Modern Missions." Although he was raised in a poor family in England, he had a great desire for learning and had mastered five foreign languages (Dutch, French, Greek, Latin and Hebrew) by the time he was twenty years old.
He became a minister, and primarily focussed his preaching on the importance of missions. When he shared his burden for the heathen at a ministerial meeting, he was reprimanded with these words, "Sit down, young man! When God sees fit to convert the heathen, He will do so of His own accord."
Despite opposition, Carey believed strongly in tis need and wrote a small book entitled, "An Enquiry into the Obligation of Christians to Use Means for the Conversion of the Heathen" (What a title!). Soon afterwards, he preached a powerful message on missions. Using Isaiah 54:2-3 as his text, he challenged others to "expect great things of God...attempt great things for God."
Because of his leadership, an English missionary society was founded. Carey traveled to India to serve in missionary work. During his 42 years of ministry, he and his co-workers translated the entire Bible into 26 languages, and the New Testament (or parts of it) into 25 more. In addition, Carey developed several dictionaries in other languages, and was actively involved in evangelism.

WHAT IS OUR OBLIGATION?
An Excerpt from "An Enquiry into the Obligation of Christians to Use Means for the Conversion of the Heathen" by William Carey
"As our blessed Lord has required us to pray that His will be done on earth as it is in heaven, it becomes us not only to express our desires of that event by words, but to use every lawful method to spread the knowledge of His name. In order to do this, it is necessary that we should become, in some measure acquainted with the religious state of the world; and as this is an object we should be prompted to pursue not only by the gospel of our Redeemer, but even by the feelings of humanity, so an inclination to conscientious activity therein would form one of the strongest proofs that we are the subjects of grace, and partakers of that spirit of universal benevolence and genuine philanthropy, which appear so eminent in the character of God Himself."

Amy Carmichael
Missionary to India (1867-1951)

Famous Carmichael Quotes:
"Thy Brother's Blood"
Amy Carmichael was born in Northern Ireland to a wealthy family. When she was eighteen, her father died, and as the eldest of seven children, Amy received much of the family responsibility.
In 1892, at the age of twenty-four, Amy Carmichael received a “call to missions,” and soon left for Japan, and later, Ceylon. After returning home for a brief time, she finally set sail for the country that would become her long-term home: INDIA!
Within twelve years, Miss Carmichael had 130 children in her care and had rescued many hundreds more. For fifty-five years, she sacrificially lived and ministered in India...without even a furlough. Many others were inspired to join with her, and together with these co-workers, she established an Indian mission work called “The Dohnaver Fellowship”.
Amy Carmichael is best remembered for her life work of saving Indian children (especially rescuing many girls from Hindu temple prostitution). Even today, through her books and writings, the impact of her life and testimony continues to challenge many to a deeper walk with the Lord, and a deeper commitment to His service.

DID NOT YOUR FOREFATHER'S KNOW? A Journal Excerpt by David Livingstone
(Note: As David Livingstone ministered thorughout Africa, one of his first converts was a tribal chief named Sechele. In Livingstone's journal, he shares a question from this chief that he could not answer. As you read this excerpt, consider how many more people are STILL WAITING for their first chance to hear the Gospel. How will we answer their question, "Why didn't ANYONE come sooner?")
"...I was from the first struck by his intelligence, and by the special manner in which we felt drawn to each other. This remarkable man has not only embraced Christianity, but expounds its doctrine to his people..."
"On the first occasion in which I even attempted to hold a public religious service, Sechele remarked that it was the custom of his nation to put questions when any new subject was brought before them. He then inquired if my forefathers knew of a future judgement. I replied in the affirmative, and began to describe the scene of the Great White Throne, and Him Who shall sit on it, from Whose face the heaven and earth shall flee away..."
"'You startle me,' he replied; 'these words make all my bones to shake; I have no more strength in me; but my forefathers were living at the same time yours were, and how is it that they did not send them word about these terrible things sooner? They all passed away into darkness without knowing whither they were going...'"

Loren Cunningham
(Founder of YWAM)
 Famous Cunningham Quotes:
"Know God...and Make Him Known!"
As a young minister, Loren Cunningham had a vision of "waves of young people" moving across the continents to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. When the desire to fulfill this dream was rejected by his denomination, Loren stepped out in faith and founded Youth With A Mission a non-denominational, international mission ministry. Today, YWAM is one of the largest missionary organizations in the world with over 7,000 missionaries in over 106 different countries. YWAM has founded The University of the Nations which has campuses around the globe, and has a mercy-ship ministry where medical teams and ministers travel on ships to minister in countries throughout the world. YWAM's motto is "To Know God...and to Make Him Known." YWAM effectively combines short-term/high-impact missions with long-term missionary work including evangelism, discipleship training, and mercy ministries. Loren Cunnigham has personally traveled to every country in the entire world, and has seen incredible lasting fruit. Loren Cunningham is an excellent contemporary example of what God can do through obedience, faith, and vision.
(NOTE: Harvest Ministry is not affiliated with YWAM, although it is a ministry we admire.)
